Streets of Newcastle

By North East Wedding photographer Marco Damian

A lot of photographers, when they consider street photography, capture the energy of a location by snapping the city without people. However, another group of photographers value the lives of the people amongst these streets. I take my inspiration from the people around me and it is these people who tell the story of a place.

Meandering through the streets of Newcastle Upon Tyne, at first glance it can appear that locals are going about their daily business without much to notice. Yet, if you pause or look a little closer, you will see creative opportunities everywhere. For instance, I spotted a father and his son feeding pigeons on what is known as “The Green” to the locals of Newcastle. At first glance, this may not appear to be a photographic opportunity but if you can appreciate the candid appeal of street photography you will notice the organic harmony of this image.

It is interesting how people react differently when they notice they’re being photographed, however you can see how the little boy was not fazed by our snaps. It was like capturing two pigeon whisperers in the making.

Later, we decided to pick a location which caught our eye based on the imagery, for example, I appreciated the pop of colour from the contemporary yellow walls which contrasted with the old industrial feel of the place. I could not think of a better example which illustrates good things come to those who wait. As we sat to wait for a person to enter the image, a young gentleman approached the walls and, to our amazement, did what I can only describe as a super human jump. Also know as Parkour. For me, this day was a microcosm for street photography. Those who seek great images in and amongst the city will find them.
